You can try a straight pattern where you start walking straight from the high bank line to the low tide line. Or, you can begin at the high bank line and detect sideways turning after 12 feet or more and moving a foot over which is called the straight sideways pattern. While your choice of gridding the beach is about preference, with either of these patterns you are marking the area with your feet so that you know where you combed and where you still need to search for metal detecting treasures. This definitely gives you an advantage over those who randomly search the beach and end up searching the same spot over and over.
